The Atlantic Flywayis the name given to the major migratory route that birds take up and down the East Coast of the United States.I have always found it to be a somewhat romantic concept. In fact, when I was younger, I had thought that Atlantic Flyway would be the perfect name for a brand of clothing. Travel gear. Adventure gear! So my title is Atlantic Flyway because most of the material here will involve a glimpse into adventurous getaways. One other reason is that Olin Sewall Pettingill, Jr, the famed ornithologist, was a relative on my grandfather's side of the family. My grandmother and mother used to talk about him and their experiences together many years ago in Maine. His one visit to our home was in the 1950s when I was quite young. Somehow our families lost contact over the years. I found his obituary a few weeks ago. He died Dec 11, 2001. He will never know that he helped to create in me a love of wildlife, and in particular, the birds of the world. The image here was found on the internet. It was taken in 1967. ![]() ![]() Fly Home |
